Perseverance: Run the Short Race

“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other”—Walter Elliot

Perseverance is Vital

Perseverance is what makes the difference. Today I did not want to go to the gym. In fact, I wanted to go home and go to bed. It was an exhausting, arduous day, and I just felt like relaxing. That wouldn’t be a problem on a regular day, but I took the day off on Saturday because I had errands to run. Today, I had to persevere and go to the gym despite my fatigue. It turns out that I was rewarded for doing so. I had one of the best workouts I’ve had in a long time. I came away from the gym in a much better frame of mind and with more energy to tackle the other items in my life that needed me – such as going to the grocery store.

Perseverance is a Series of Short Races

Elliot was right when he said perseverance is not a long race, but a series of short races. Each day, anew, I have to make many decisions to keep going, to keep working out, and to keep writing. Each day is its own race. You can’t win the long race unless you win most of the small races. You just have to keep plugging along, knowing that the time will come when you will see the finish line for the day. And that is its own reward.

Chasing the Dream

Achieve Your Dream

You have a dream that you have always wanted to achieve. You pull it out to think about whenever times get bad. Yet, you’ve never taken any action on the goal at all.
Why not? Is it because you are afraid you’ll fail? Is it because you have been laughed at? WHY haven’t you done something to accomplish your dream? Well, today is THE day! Take fifteen minutes to do the following exercise to help clarify your goal.

Breaking Through the Barriers

Find a timer. Set it for ten minutes. Get a pad and pen. Now, for the next ten minutes I want you to list ALL the obstacles that are in the way of you achieving your goal. List ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that comes to mind.
Now, take the list. Look at it with an objective eye. Pretend that a friend has come to you with the list about his/her dream. Which obstacles would you tell them to mark off because they aren’t really obstacles? Then mark them off. Which obstacles are real and not just in your head? Think about them. Rank them in order of how hard they will be to overcome.
Set the timer for 10 more minutes. Now, pick the least hard obstacle. Brainstorm for the entire ten minutes of ways you could overcome the obstacle. Then pick one of those ways and do it today.
For example,if the obstacle is no education, then look up the number of your local community college and call to find out which classes it offers and how you enroll. Take an action step. Dreaming is like a car, but action is the gas that gets you where you need to go.

Get Started Today

Start now on the path of achieving your dream. Tomorrow is a vision; today is a present. Use the present to move toward the vision. You can do it. All it takes is the first step!

Be a friend

0

Your mom was right.  The only way to get a friend is to be a friend.  It is impossible to make friends if you consistently push people away.  One way to be a friend is to listen to people.  Listening is a lost art.  When you listen to someone you should not be thinking about what you want to say next.  Really focus on the person. Ask questions. Focus on them!

Three Ways to Achieving The Gratitude Attitude

0

rose“Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.” Alphonse Carr certainly had the right attitude about life. There are times in my life that I have found myself moaning about something in my life for which I should be grateful. It is possible to discover the gratitude attitude instead.
1. Be present. It’s a beautiful season, here in East Tennessee. The leaves are changing; the air is crisp. I had not noticed ANY of this until this week, when I finally slowed down and took it all in.
2. Say thanks. Every day I notice how little our society says “thank you” anymore. It seems we have a sense of “entitlement.” No one owes us anything. Nothing. We should be grateful to others for any kindness they show us.
3. Be grateful.  List everything for which you should be grateful. I’m grateful for my family and friends, for God’s love and generosity towards me, and many other reasons. Sometimes when something is bothering me, I focus on that and get unhappy. I’ve been accused of being a Pollyanna (thanks, Kate!), but in reality, I have had some rough times. Really rough times. I just have chosen to focus on what is right in my life. Does that mean I never get discouraged, that I never get down? Quite the contrary! I can complain with the best of them. I have just noticed that I am happier (and my family and friends are happier) when I focus on the positive. Nothing may inherently change about the situation, but my attitude will make a big difference.

Some people argue that a positive attitude does not help; I disagree, because I have lived both ways.  Being positive is infinitely better.
